Selection of Program Applicants

Selection of students into the program is very competitive. Scores listed above  represent the minimum requirements and do NOT guarantee admission into the program. Selection into the Practical Nursing program will be based on points earned by each applicant. Points can be accumulated based on the rubric that is used in the selection process.

Selection of students into the program will be based on the ACT score, ATI TEAS score, college GPA, selected academic college course work taken and previous healthcare experience. Approximately 40 applicants are selected for the Fall class and approximately 40 applicants are selected for the Spring class in Ellisville. Approximately 20 students are selected for the Fall Jasper class. Approximately 20 students each are selected for the Wayne and Ellisville part-time classes during their application cycle on odd years. *In case students have the same amount of total points on the rubric, the applicant with the highest combination of points from the GPA and ACT will be considered. If there is still a tie, the in-district applicant is given priority and further ties will be broken by a random drawing.

Students selected will be notified by letter or email. All qualified applicants not selected will be placed on an alternate list; in the event of a vacancy, the alternate will be notified via phone call or email. After notification of acceptance, the student will be required to provide the following:

  • Attend Orientation Session
  • Current certification of Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Physical examination
  • Two Step Tuberculosis (TB) skin test
  • MMR (shot record); must be college compliant per Health Department standards
  • Hepatitis B Immunization series of three injections or signed declination
  • Influenza (Flu) Vaccination
  • Tdap
  • Varicellax2
  • Covid-19 vaccination per Facility Policy

Once admitted into the program, students must clear criminal background check. Maintain an 80% average on attempted coursework as outlined in the Practical Nursing Manual. Students selected into the Practical Nursing Program will be required to submit to a random drug test prior to the first day of clinical.

Practical Nursing Guidelines for Granting Prior Credit

Applicants previously enrolled in a Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing program may request consideration for transfer credit.

A minimum grade of “C is required for coursework to be eligible for review.

Transfer credit may be considered for courses successfully completed that met the passing and progression standards of the originating nursing program.

Transfer credit is not automatic and is not guaranteed. The Practical Nursing Program reserves the right to accept or decline requests for transfer credit or advanced placement.

Applicants requesting transfer credit must:

  • Submit an application for admission to the Jones College Practical Nursing Program
  • Submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities
  • Provide course descriptions or syllabi for nursing courses completed in the previous program
  • Provide documentation from the previous nursing program director verifying the applicant left the program in good standing or documenting the reason the student was unable to progress
  • Meet the Jones College Practical Nursing Program ACT admission requirement (applicants requesting transfer credit are not required to take the TEAS test)

Submitted documentation will be reviewed by Practical Nursing Program faculty to determine eligibility for transfer credit and placement.

Placement decisions are based on several factors including:

  • Availability of space in the requested class
  • Congruency between prior course objectives and the Jones College Practical Nursing curriculum
  • Successful completion of comparable coursework with a grade of “Câ€ or higher
  • Coursework completed at a regionally accredited college or university

Students who have successfully completed the first semester of a Practical Nursing program within the previous two years may be considered for transfer credit equivalent to first-semester PNV coursework at 91ÁÔÆæ.

Students who have successfully completed two semesters of a Registered Nursing program within the previous two years may be considered for transfer credit equivalent to first-semester PNV coursework at 91ÁÔÆæ.

Applicants seeking transfer credit or advanced placement may be required to demonstrate competency prior to final placement determination. Competency verification may include, but is not limited to:

  • Demonstration of selected first-semester clinical skills
  • Demonstration of competency in dosage calculations
  • Demonstration of competency in Level I nursing course content through written testing

Granting transfer credit does not exempt a student from completing required clinical learning experiences as determined by the Jones College Practical Nursing Program.
