  {"id":6894,"date":"2026-07-01T10:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T16:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jcjc.edu\/jcnews\/?p=6894"},"modified":"2026-07-01T10:39:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T16:39:49","slug":"jones-college-celebrates-young-writers-through-american-hero-essay-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jcjc.edu\/jcnews\/news\/jones-college-celebrates-young-writers-through-american-hero-essay-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Jones College Celebrates Young Writers Through American Hero Essay Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ELLISVILLE \u2013<\/strong> Jones College is investing in the next generation of writers, leaders and storytellers through the inaugural <strong>Jones College American Hero Essay Contest<\/strong>, an initiative designed to inspire students across the Pine Belt to explore the lives of those who have demonstrated courage, sacrifice and service while strengthening their own writing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted in partnership with the Laurel-Jones County Library and the <em>Laurel Leader-Call<\/em>, the contest invited elementary, middle and high school students to submit original essays recognizing an American hero who has made a lasting impact on their lives or on the nation&#8217;s history. Byrd was recognized during the June 24 awards ceremony at the Laurel-Jones County Library for her winning essay highlighting Revolutionary War heroine Deborah Sampson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our mission extends beyond the classroom,&#8221; said Sabrina Young, Executive Vice President of Advancement at 91ÁÔÆæ. &#8220;We want to encourage students to think critically, communicate effectively and recognize the qualities of leadership and service that shape our communities and our country. This contest gave students the opportunity to do exactly that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Hero Essay Contest reflects Jones College&#8217;s ongoing commitment to educational outreach and community partnerships that encourage academic excellence beyond the college campus.
