Changes in spring registration for Jones College students

ELLISVILLE – As Jones College students begin enrolling for the spring semester, they will notice some important updates to the process. Students now have two ways to be enrollment ready: the Aid Path or the Pay Path. Through the college’s App icon, “Am I Ready to Enroll? personalized messaging allows students to check their next steps.

“Students have two simple options to get enrollment ready, said Dr. Amanda McLeod, Vice President of Enrollment Management. “If your scholarships or financial aid cover $250 or more, you’re on the Aid Path and you owe nothing before enrolling in classes. If you’re on the Pay Path, you’ll need to pay $250 toward your tuition or meet with an Enrollment Counselor to secure aid or set up a financial plan before creating your schedule.

All Jones College students are supported throughout the enrollment process and have access to resources in Enrollment Services every step of the way. Jones College’s Director of Financial Aid and Admissions, Kari Dedwylder explained Jones College offers a wide range of financial aid opportunities to help students meet enrollment requirements and successfully complete their degree.

“Thanks to the FAFSA Simplification Act, applying for federal aid is now easier than ever, opening doors to additional grants and loans. Students may also qualify for support through the State Office of Financial Aid, the Jones College Foundation, and institutional scholarships that recognize both academic achievement and campus involvement, said Dedwylder.

While students can explore these options on the JC website at, / they don’t have to navigate the process alone. Enrollment Counselors are available to guide students step by step, answering questions about the “Pay Path and help them understand the best funding options for their situation.

“In addition, our two dedicated Student Solutions Coordinators provide one-on-one support for students facing barriers or financial challenges, working with them from application to award, to ensure all requirements are met.

Jones College is committed to expanding access by offering new aid opportunities, including federal funds for workforce program participants, and helping every student find a clear and supported path to enrollment and graduation, said Dedwylder.

One important change to note is the economic hardship and unemployment deferments will be phased out by July 2027. Other parts of the Higher Education Reform Reconciliation Act (HERRA) legislation recently passed by Congress affecting financial aid will be phased in over the next three years. One big change current borrowers with old repayment plans face with the HERRA is the requirement to transition by July 2028. Jones College’s Mark Brown unveils “All Roads Lead to Jones mural

ELLISVILLE – As part of Jones College’s recent Homecoming festivities, art instructor Mark Brown’s mural, “All Roads Lead to Jonesâ€ was unveiled. The 37-foot wide and 8-foot-high mural covers most of the wall in the Student Union at 91ÁÔÆæ. The project took Brown more than one year to research and paint, which depicts the history of Jones County Agricultural High School, which would later be known as Ellisville High School. The high school was located on the campus of Jones County Junior College, now known as Jones College.

Jones College President, Dr. Jesse Smith gives Mark Brown, pictured with his wife, Julie Brown a commemorative award in appreciation for his creation of the 37-foot wide and 8-foot-high mural, “All Roads Lead to Jonesâ€ painted in the Student Union at 91ÁÔÆæ.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to do this project which began last March. I especially want my students to know, there is more to creating a large-scale mural than just coming up with an idea and sketching it out, explained Brown who has been teaching at JC for 21 years. “There was geometrical planning, before a computerized image was created. I also did a lot of research about the college, including its beginnings as Jones County Agricultural High School. I wanted to place historical reminders of the past, like the original seal designed by a student in 1933, and the school bell which was rung to begin classes, and depict the collegiate academic and career and technical divisions, the athletic and fine arts uniforms over the years, and historical campus buildings, while also tying in the Homecoming theme of ‘All Roads Lead to Jones.’

The mural can be removed if the wall or space is remodeled to preserve the artist rendering of the last 114 years when the high school was established in 1911 and when college courses were first offered with the creation of Jones County Junior College, in September 1927.

Jones College’s art gallery features Mandy Buchanan’s “Life Painted in Sunshineâ€

Mandy Buchanan

ELLISVILLE – On display from September 22 through October 16, in the Eula Bass Lewis Art Gallery at 91ÁÔÆæ, will be the artwork of 1988 Jones College graduate and Laurel painter, Mandy Buchanan. The show titled, “Mandy Buchanan: A Life Painted in Sunshineâ€ will feature the bright and beautifully painted pieces of artwork and pottery on loan from community members, to celebrate the radiant artist’s life. She passed away in November 2022, at the age of 54, after enduring a battle with cancer. A closing reception will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery on the campus of Jones College in Ellisville and is open to the public.

“Some of her friends, including Julie Brown, asked if we could show her work in the gallery. I thought this was a wonderful idea. Mandy was a prolific painter, and some members of the community have agreed to let us borrow their paintings. It’s really a treat to see a gallery full of Mandy’s paintings, said JC Art instructor, Melanie Eubanks.

Buchanan graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with her Bachelor’s Degree in 1991 and then she earned a Master’s Degree in Art Education from the University of Southern Mississippi the following year.

Her paintings, much like her personality, bring sunshine and joy to any room where they are displayed. Buchanan’s infectious laugh and one of a kind smile are engraved in the memories of those who will forever miss her and will never forget the way she touched their lives through her talents, her gifts, and most of all her friendship. This art show is one way of remembering her and her talent.

The former educator at Laurel High School and Jones College, Buchanan, mentored many students and helped to instill and foster a love of the arts. She spent countless hours painting backdrops and stage props during her years as a teacher and also for Laurel Little Theater. Throughout the city of Laurel, murals, utility boxes, and newspaper stands boast Mandy’s artistic talents and remain treasures in the community and are reminders of her kindness, selflessness, and passion for spreading joy to others.

As a life member of Junior Auxiliary, Buchanan was recognized in 2011 with the Golden Crown Award and again in 2018 with the Humanitarian Award, representing her deep devotion to the children of Laurel and Jones County. Mandy served the Lauren Rogers Museum of Arts for many years and was a loyal contributor of her time and talents for numerous fundraisers. During her time at the museum, she served as Director of Education and founded the outreach education program.

Serving the Laurel Arts League as an active member from 1996-2006 and thereafter as a life member for many years, she demonstrated her selflessness through her dedication to Day in the Park, Heritage Arts Festival, and Very Special Arts. As a life member, Buchanan remained deeply involved in the arts league and was always willing to donate her time and talents to meet any need presented.

Mandy was a member of Crosspoint Community Church of Laurel, served on the board of Laurel Main Street, and was an avid participant in community events such as En Plein Air and Loblolly Festival. She was also a member of Mississippi Art Colony, National Association of Art Educators, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
